River tragedy: Attempt to save footwear costs this student’s life

What could have been a memorable tour in normal times, has now become an unforgettable living nightmare for all. On Sunday, about 50 students from VNR college of engineering were travelling to Manali when they halted near a dam at Kullu valley to take pictures.

Unfortunately, death descended on them in the form of roaring, swirling water released from the Larji hydroelectric plant nearby and took them away with it.

The tragic incident turned fatal for many students but one among them could have survived from death if only she did not get  back into the swirling waters looking for her missing footwear.

Srinidhi, who was posing for photographs along with the other students standing in the river, initially managed to escape when water suddenly gushed in and washed away the other students. However, she almost immediately got back into the river to retrieve her footwear and proved fatal for her.

“We last saw our daughter on June 2 when she left our house for a North and East India tour, organized by her college”, her grieved parents said. Among the 24 students of VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology, so far only five bodies were fished out and these were sent for postmortem.
