No doubt, the blast of a gas pipeline of Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), public sector firm run by state government, in Nagaram village in East Godavari district is a dreadful tragedy. A massive fire, triggered suspectedly after a tea vendor lit up a stove in the vicinity of the leaking pipeline running through residential areas of Nagaram village caused 17 dead and 18 injured (as per latest reports). The disaster is going to have long impact on the locales and it is really unfortunate.
Both State government and Central government have immediately responded and swung into action. Efforts are being made to 'save' the injured who has burns in the tragedy. 100% medical treatment is provided. Government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 25 Lakh each would be given to the kin of those who died.
The Leader of Opposition YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's demand for compensation is raising many eye brows. Needless to say that Jagan is "politicizing" the issue. Jagan Reddy has demanded for Rs 1 crore compensation to each person's family who lost their lives in the deadly blast. Jagan's demand is practically impossible and he is aware that Rs 1 Crore compensation is out of question given that new State of Andhra Pradesh is mired in neck-deep financial woes as the budget of the State is in huge deficit.
Yet CM Chandra Babu Naidu managed to announce Rs 25 Lakh compensation, with the help of centre, and it is reasonable although no one can bring back the lives. It is highly unfortunate that Opposition party, which should play constructive and objective role during such man-made disasters, is painting politics and want to take political advantage out of such dreadful tragedy. It's high time Jagan must wake up to reality and talk some sense but not non-sense. All the victims now need is love and affection but not sympathy and compensation.
