Celina Jaitly makes her singing debut with the UN video on gay rights

Former beauty queen and actress Celina Jaitly made her singing debut with the Bollywood-style UN video on gay rights that spreads a broader message of the need to change not just laws but also attitudes and to challenge stereotypes about the lesbian, gays, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT).

The 32-year-old actress and mother of twins, took to Twitter to thank everyone for making ‘The Welcome’ song highest viewed. This Bollywood-style video called ‘The Welcome’ narrates the story of a young man who brings his boyfriend home for the first time and wins acceptance from his family. The video promotes the UN’s Free and Equal campaign championing equality for LGBT people and an end to homophobia.

Celina Jaitly had said in a press conference earlier that the video uses the universal language of music to try to reach as many people as possible with the message that fighting discrimination doesn’t just mean changing laws and policies, “you also need to make a change of hearts and minds.”

The video has got tremendous response from people not only in India but from other parts of the world. The video has been seen by more than 337,660 people around the world. She became an LGBT activist 10 years ago, Celina said, “the very people who made me what I am today came from that community, including a transgender makeup artist who without my knowledge, filled out the form to enter in the Miss India contest. Today, I am here, I think, thanks to him.”

Celina Jaitly also said that she will not stop fighting for equal rights for lesbians, gays, transgender people and bisexuals despite years of character assassination and threats to her life and the lives of her two-year-old twins. Celina Jaitly was last year nominated by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as a UN Equality Champion in recognition of her support for LGBT rights.
